Cotton toe puffs
and counters.
A century. Still
the benchmark.

Morel has been making cotton-based toe puffs and counters in Milan since 1926. Fourth-generation, family-run. The original inventor of the cotton toe puff. The only manufacturer in the world using Wavetech technology — and densely printed on every sheet to prevent imitation.

What they do

The reinforcements
you don't see.

Toe puffs and counters sit between the upper and the lining. They never face the customer. But they decide how the shoe behaves for the next thousand wears.

Toe puff (Puntale). The toe puff sits between upper and lining at the front. Its job is to hold the toe shape — permanently, without cracking, distorting or losing stiffness. Heat-activated during lasting, sets to shape, then holds.

Counter (Contrafforte). The counter sits at the heel. It holds the heel cup, supports the wearer's foot laterally, maintains the silhouette of the back. For high-heel and boots — where structural stress is highest — the right grade is the difference between a shoe that holds shape and one that collapses.

01Why Morel is different

Five things no one
else does together.

01

Wavetech technology.

Cotton textiles impregnated with proprietary latexes and dried using Morel's Wavetech process — enhancing elasticity, breathability, shape retention, with zero production waste. No other manufacturer uses this process.

02

Industry 4.0 powder scattering.

Custom-built 4.0 scattering line allows raw-material blends impossible on standard machines. Zero waste, zero noise, extraordinary precision in adhesive deposition.

03

100% Made in Milano.

Every sheet — Classic, LUMINE, Customizable — manufactured in Marcallo con Casone, Milan. Production has never left Italy.

04

Densely printed against imitation.

Morel products are imitated all over the world. Every sheet is densely printed with the product name on one side — so a buyer who asks for Morel can verify they got Morel.

05

Pioneered water-based adhesives.

In the 1960s, Morel introduced Silvertex — the first water-based adhesive in footwear — decades before sustainability became an industry requirement. Cotton over plastic has always been their position.

02A century in Milan

From a hospital bed
to the ICF Group.

1900The beginning

Maurice Morel born in Normandy, France. Son of a shoemaker. Learns the craft early; in a small laboratory begins developing techniques to reinforce shoes — starting with melted caoutchouc rubber glue.

1920The invention

World War One. Maurice is injured, confined to a hospital bed. He has a simple, genius idea: a piece of cloth impregnated with glue. Easy to work with. Perfect as a reinforcement for toe puffs. He opens his first factory.

1924Roi du Bout Dur

Maurice has factories across Europe. The inventor of the cotton toe puff. In his characteristic extravagant manner, he proclaims himself "Roi du Bout Dur" — King of the Toe Puff — and becomes legend.

1935Via Gradisca 18

The 1929 financial crisis hits hard. Antonio Ghiringhelli — a young accountant at La Scala opera — is appointed to rescue the company. He builds the current factory at Via Gradisca 18, where Morel still operates today.

The German army occupies the factory as a strategic position, anti-aircraft guns on the roof. British forces bomb part of the building in 1944. American troops occupy and place it under Allied Military Government protection in 1945.

1948Reconstruction

Ghiringhelli is called by Milan's new mayor to supervise the reconstruction of La Scala — a role he holds until 1972 — while continuing as President of Morel, entrusting day-to-day to chemistry graduate Ottavio Bonfanti.

1960sInnovation

Morel introduces two industry-changing innovations: Silvertex — the first water-based adhesive ever used in footwear — and MORELAST, the toe puff so iconic that shoemakers stopped asking for "a toe puff" and started asking for "the Morelast."

1972King's farewell

Maurice Morel dies, with style. He builds his own grave engraved "Roi Du Bout Dur." Rumours say he asked for a telephone line and champagne bottles to be placed inside.

1992Focus

Ottavio Bonfanti hands the company to his son Luca. The adhesive division is sold to focus entirely on toe puffs and counters — enabling Morel to export to the world's best shoe manufacturers, with production remaining exclusively in Italy.

The Classic Line
— Toe Puffs.

Built on recycled cotton from discarded garments — an upcycled material at the core, refined through a century of production knowledge and Wavetech technology.

MORELAST

MORELASTThe icon

The toe puff that gave Morel its legend. Introduced in the 1960s — so successful that shoemakers stopped asking for "a toe puff" and started asking for "the Morelast." Still Morel's best-seller today.

COMPLETEX

COMPLETEXVersatile

A comprehensive grade developed for versatility across shoe types and upper materials. Reliable performance across a broad range of constructions without grade-switching.

VISCOTEX

VISCOTEXSpecialised

Specific adhesive and viscosity properties — engineered where MORELAST or COMPLETEX need adjustment, particularly for specific leather types or production-line configurations.

CA

CACold-activated

Cold-activated formulation — no heat press required. For lines without a heat-activation step or where the upper material is heat-sensitive.

FLEXON

FLEXONFlexible

The high-flexibility grade — for soft casual footwear, moccasins, ballet flats — where the toe must flex with the shoe rather than hold a rigid form.

II.

The Classic Line
— Counters.

The same Wavetech-treated cotton substrate, formulated for the heel — five grades for everything from trainers to high-heel boots.

FLEXOTEX

FLEXOTEXThe elastic counter

For constructions where the heel counter must flex and recover without losing shape. Casual footwear, trainers, any shoe where the heel area experiences repeated lateral flexion.

COMPLETEX counter

COMPLETEXVersatile counter

Same comprehensive positioning as the COMPLETEX toe puff. Works reliably across heel constructions from low-heel men's to mid-heel women's.

FP

FPFull-profile

For constructions where the full counter profile is required — typically higher-heel women's shoes and boots where maximum lateral support is the priority.

CA counter

CACold-activated counter

Same principle as the CA toe puff — no heat press required. For heat-sensitive uppers or production lines without a press station at counter-insertion.

FLEXON counter

FLEXONFlexible counter

The high-flexibility counter for casual and soft constructions. Pairs naturally with the FLEXON toe puff for a consistently soft hand throughout the finished shoe.

III.

LUMINE
— fully biodegradable.

Morel's Classic Line is already genuinely sustainable — cotton, upcycled, water-based adhesives since the 1960s. LUMINE goes further: fully biodegradable, certified ISO 14855.2012. Three hardness grades. For brands that need a sustainability claim the product can back up.

LUMINE S

LUMINE SSoft

For casual footwear, moccasins, ballet flats — shoe constructions where a light, flexible toe or counter structure is required. Fully biodegradable. ISO 14855.2012 certified.

LUMINE M

LUMINE MMedium

The versatile LUMINE grade — for mid-heel women's, everyday men's, and any construction that needs a balanced stiffness-to-flexibility ratio. Fully biodegradable.

LUMINE H

LUMINE HHard

Maximum stiffness in the LUMINE range. For high-heel women's and any construction where the toe or counter must hold a precise shape under high structural load.

When a buyer or retailer asks for your sustainability documentation on toe puffs and counters, LUMINE is the answer that comes with a certificate.

IV.

Customizable
— co-developed with brands.

Every product in the Customizable Line exists because a real customer came to Morel with a specific requirement and Morel built a product for it. Send your spec; they'll engineer a starting point.
